The International Museum Day has its origins in the Crusade of the Museums, information campaign organized in 1951 by UNESCO and the International Council of Museums (ICOM), in order to raise awareness of the relevant role for these compounds in society. In 1977, during the XII General Conference of ICOM in the Russian city of Leningrad and considering that initiative, was launched on May 18 as a significant date in which the nations are united in a sort of celebration of museums.
